Welcome to the Small Stones Festival of the Arts - 2020 COVID-19 Edition

Awards Note: Jurors' Choice Awards were also given to each of the First and Second Prizewinners in each category, alhtough this gallery only supports showing one prize per work.

 

  1. VIEWING - Click on an image for a larger view.
  2. NAVIGATION - The images are sorted with prizewinners first (note that most prizes will be awarded on October 23), then alphabetically by artist last name. Note that there are 25 pages in the gallery - use the page selector to see more entries.
  3. SEARCHING - You can enter an artist's first or last name in the search box to find a given artist.
  4. FILTERING - You can create a filtered view to see only paintings or photography by selecting a choice in the Category Filter box. You can see only those entries selected by our jury for inclusion in our printed catalog by using the Tag Filter.  The Tag Filter also allows you to view entries by members of the Blackstone Valley Art Association or Worcester County Camera Club.
  5. VOTING - Voting is now closed.
  6. PURCHASING ARTWORK - This year, Small Stones Festival is not directly selling any of the artwork on exhibition.  If you wish to purchase an artwork, some of the works include a web address for the artist, allowing you to contact them directly via their website.  For others, we will relay any messages sent to artists@smallstonesfestival.org.  Specify which artist you wish to contact and provide your contact information.

Artist statement: Artist Statement I’m feeling a true urgency to paint -especially now- from instinct, observation, and gut responses-in the practice of Direct Oil Painting. Painting for me reveals: searches and surprises, methods from master teachers, sensibilities and masses of paint. The figure is most compelling to me, as is the paint itself. Together they give attention to things that matter. It’s all in there- and I’m all in.

Artist statement: Taken in the Italian Dolomites shortly after sunrise. Clouds were moving in fast and for a brief period of time covered a portion of the mountain top, leaving the peak unobstructed. A few minutes later the peaks could not be seen and stayed under clouds the rest of the day. Visited this peak multiple mornings before capturing ideal conditions. Thought the cabin provided sense of scale to the grand and dramatic landscape.

Artist statement: Diane’s interest in photography started about 20 years ago. Her style is eclectic and includes nature, street, landscape, macro and abstract. Diane has been part of the Natick Artists Open Studios for the past two years and has had photographs chosen in the Natick Juried Art Exhibit. She was a photographer for the cupola installation at The Center for Arts in Natick (TCAN) and this summer, for the LOVE01760/Spark Kindness heart project.

Artist statement: Essential workers are the heroes of the pandemic. I set out to document city life in the times of an unprecedented pandemic. Nothing felt normal because nothing was. The subject of my photo is a DHL package delivery man. The tranquil nature scene on the truck juxtaposes a harsh reality and creates a void into a burden-free time. I wanted to draw attention to the importance of essential workers, like this man.

Artist statement: My paintings are made from direct observation which for me, is the most exciting way to paint the quintessential traits unique to the person, moment, and time. My models are people I meet at happenstance in my day to day life. "The Graduate" is a young man who suffered a crippling accident. In less than a year he proved everyone wrong and won an athletic and academic college scholarship. His slightly upward tilt of his chin is him say your no is my oh yes I can.

Artist statement: Gordon Saperia is a Boston area landscape photographer who prefers low-light settings to present the interaction between nature and light. In order to practice his craft, he sometimes finds it necessary to take advantage of landscape locations that include the “hand of man” or even man herself. The resulting images often reveal high drama with a new perspective or story.

Artist statement: I took a trip to Venice Italy, and the most frequent question I am asked is "what is it like?" The only way I can explain my experience of Venice is, every corner, every alleyway, everywhere you turn"it's like walking into a painting". This painting is from one of the many sketch studies I drew during my visit, unknown to me, this canal flows through one of the oldest parts of Venice and is highly photographed and painted spot. Now my work joins the collection of art created by a stunning view.

Artist statement: Travel and photography have always been passions of mine. I was at Thunder Hole in Acadia National Park surrounded by too many tourist. I decided to shoot in a direction free of people. As I was setting up my camera to take a long exposure of the ocean and rocks, this girl walks into my frame. I couldn't have asked for anything better!

Artist statement: Travel and photography have always been passions of mine. I was hiking in Alaska when I came upon this setting. I took several photos trying to capture what I saw in my mind, but could not do it justice. This image sat on a hard drive for years until I saw a tutorial on Smart Objects in Photoshop. Happy I never deleted this photo!
