Welcome to the Small Stones Festival of the Arts - 2020 COVID-19 Edition

Awards Note: Jurors' Choice Awards were also given to each of the First and Second Prizewinners in each category, alhtough this gallery only supports showing one prize per work.

 

  1. VIEWING - Click on an image for a larger view.
  2. NAVIGATION - The images are sorted with prizewinners first (note that most prizes will be awarded on October 23), then alphabetically by artist last name. Note that there are 25 pages in the gallery - use the page selector to see more entries.
  3. SEARCHING - You can enter an artist's first or last name in the search box to find a given artist.
  4. FILTERING - You can create a filtered view to see only paintings or photography by selecting a choice in the Category Filter box. You can see only those entries selected by our jury for inclusion in our printed catalog by using the Tag Filter.  The Tag Filter also allows you to view entries by members of the Blackstone Valley Art Association or Worcester County Camera Club.
  5. VOTING - Voting is now closed.
  6. PURCHASING ARTWORK - This year, Small Stones Festival is not directly selling any of the artwork on exhibition.  If you wish to purchase an artwork, some of the works include a web address for the artist, allowing you to contact them directly via their website.  For others, we will relay any messages sent to artists@smallstonesfestival.org.  Specify which artist you wish to contact and provide your contact information.

Artist statement: Witness an approaching storm coming from the east over Douglas, MA. One can see the rain under the clouds moving across the top of the trees. This was an image I captured with my aerial drone. I barely made it back to safety as the rain and winds quickly engulfed my drone. However, the result was an image rarely captured so close to a Northeast storm.

Artist statement: “For Reasons I Cannot Explain” I have returned to the abandoned convent, the Sisters of Mercy, each trip to County Clare, Ireland. Together with the late David Lang, some wonderful sculptural and photographic art has been created and shared from this site. On this particular occasion, I was standing in the kitchens of the convent and heard a whooshing sound overhead. Artist statement: This is a pandemic shot. With so many places shut down, I have been forced to look for new places and, at times, to look harder for a subject that truly interests me. This was one such shot, at one such place, along a bike trail in Massachusetts. I believe that "Cracks in the Foundation Part II" will be interpreted by each of us in a different way, but I would like to point out that the foundation in this picture is still standing.

Artist statement: Water is one of my favorite things to photograph, and it is one of the funnest subjects to edit. In this particular shot, however, you might be surprised to learn that I barely touched those colors in the editing process. This shot was all about the capture...taking my time to observe and appreciate the small details right in front of me and recording it. The fun in this shot came when I was pulling up my pictures to discover what I wasn't able to fully take in with my eyes while on site.

Artist statement: 2020 has challenged me to look harder to find the Beauty in Every Bit. Desperate for some outdoor camera time, my husband and I walked around our neighborhood. It was spring, and the swans were back in the pond. As a birder, I've taken lots of pictures of birds, but I decided it was time for photo "playtime" as we settled in to watch the swans for a few minutes. I soon discovered the depth of color in this white bird each time it displayed its wings, each layer adding a new level of depth.
