Welcome to the Small Stones Festival of the Arts - 2020 COVID-19 Edition

Awards Note: Jurors' Choice Awards were also given to each of the First and Second Prizewinners in each category, alhtough this gallery only supports showing one prize per work.

 

  1. VIEWING - Click on an image for a larger view.
  2. NAVIGATION - The images are sorted with prizewinners first (note that most prizes will be awarded on October 23), then alphabetically by artist last name. Note that there are 25 pages in the gallery - use the page selector to see more entries.
  3. SEARCHING - You can enter an artist's first or last name in the search box to find a given artist.
  4. FILTERING - You can create a filtered view to see only paintings or photography by selecting a choice in the Category Filter box. You can see only those entries selected by our jury for inclusion in our printed catalog by using the Tag Filter.  The Tag Filter also allows you to view entries by members of the Blackstone Valley Art Association or Worcester County Camera Club.
  5. VOTING - Voting is now closed.
  6. PURCHASING ARTWORK - This year, Small Stones Festival is not directly selling any of the artwork on exhibition.  If you wish to purchase an artwork, some of the works include a web address for the artist, allowing you to contact them directly via their website.  For others, we will relay any messages sent to artists@smallstonesfestival.org.  Specify which artist you wish to contact and provide your contact information.

Artist statement: This is part of the views one can find at River Bend Park in Uxbridge, MA. Called "Tri-river", it includes the Blackstone River and Canal, and is next to Rice City Park. I have no idea why it's called Rice City!!! I love bridges. I just do. And we have many in our area to enjoy.

Artist statement: The view from the front of the mill is the one you usually see- but I think the back is more interesting! I came here as a child with my family a lot- and in College I used to eat lunch here sitting on one of the old mill stones...which were usually surrounded by poison ivy. They have fixed that! But it still is one of the nicest places to walk around and enjoy- and sometimes you can get inside too.

Artist statement: While visiting my brother in Florida, this elderly gentleman was playing a piano in the next apartment and the door was open. I poked my head in and there he sat with beautiful light coming in, performing a piece by Wagner. He granted me permission to take his photo with my cell phone. I was just learning how to paint with watercolors and printed a copy of the original and mailed it to him. It was a wonderful feeling.

Artist statement: Textile mills brought jobs to areas where they were built, but the environmental impact of toxic chemicals polluted the rivers. With the closing of the old mills and clean up efforts that were made, the river runs clear again. Comparatively speaking.

Artist statement: I am a grandmother who loves to paint and that is also my way of portraying my emotions. As a result of the pandemic, I have been unable to visit my grandchildren and have been missing them immensely. I imagined them enjoying themselves near a lake, my grandson who loves fishing and my granddaughter who loves to spend time with their pet dog. I love to work with various mediums and different subjects. I have used acrylic paint on canvas for this painting.

Artist statement: My charcoal painting represents the beauty of Shilabalika in Belur, Karnataka, India. Shilabalika is a graceful stone sculpture depicting young women in a variety of poses. These include artful representations of dance postures, women playing musical instruments, and grooming. I have used charcoal on paper to draw Darpana Sundari, the lady with the mirror. I enjoyed working on creating the beautiful creepers, the abundance of jewelry, and the graceful pose with the mirror.

Artist statement: Planet 1 is part of Beyond Plant Earth collection attempting to break the conventional perception of landscape and challenging the way we think about space. Questioning on how to use a painting process to create an intimate connection with the unknown landscape of the outer space, Ponnapa traveled to San Pedro de Atacama, an area known for extreme arid environment resemble the Martian landscape, to observe Likan Antai people and their relationship with the surrounding landscape and beyond.
